Scaly leg mite

Image
Summer is supposed to be the season for creepy crawlies, but one of my chickens have picked up leg mites in the middle of winter. Scaly leg mites are little mites that live under the scales on the chicken legs. It's irritating to them and can cause the scales to lift up. Like on Effie's legs above. Effie brought leg mites back with her from the place that we bought her from. We treated it successfully but now it is Flopsy's turn.

Chicken Breakfast - Part 2

Image
More breakfasts I have served my chickens! To start off with, a fruit salad, nectarines and strawberries. Looks absolutely yummy right? My chickens didn't think so, ignored it completely. Maybe it wasn't sweet enough?

Giving your chicken a haircut - Special DumDum issue

Image
Moult season is over for DumDum and she has nice fluffy feathers to keep her warm throughout winter. The only problem is that she has a nice head of feathers that seems to be obscuring her vision. For a normal chicken, this probably wouldn't be too much of an issue, her sister DeeDee has a much larger pom pom head and has no problem. But this is our special DumDum chicken who takes problems like this to a whole new level.

Chicken Breakfasts - Part 1

Image
Nearly every morning, I prepare a breakfast for my chickens. It's partly a treat and partly to say sorry for leaving them alone all day, while I go to work. I try to give them variety with their breakfasts and there are also days when I have absolutely no time to feed them (more on that later). So here's a run down of some breakfasts I make for them. The one above is rice, sardines and chopped spinach. One of their absolute favourites. Anything with meat or fish, goes in about 2 seconds!

Buffy makes a nest

Image
Not to be outdone by Penguin, Buffy is probably the cutest rooster to make a nest. This orange ball of fluffy feathers, his high pitched clucks makes this video so adorable!

Fromage's first egg!

Came home on Thursday night to see this little speckled egg in the nest box. Little Fromage has laid her first egg!
