Who says chickens are dumb?

Check out Flopsy, who decided that a wet and rainy day outside was not for her.

So normally when I let them out to free range, Flopsy likes to stand right next to the front door. Effie likes to be near Flopsy, so she usually around as well (but she has other intentions too).

To me, it seems that Flopsy's main objective in life is to find a warm and comfy spot to sleep. She's an opportunist and has found out that if the front door has been left open, that it is nice and warm inside the house. She then discovered that the heater is even better.

So it was interesting this weekend when I walked into the house and started doing something in the kitchen. I had no idea there was a chicken in the house until Flopsy decided to cluck! And there she was, warming her tootsies next to the fire.

I've also found her doing this:

She discovered that the mat is also warm, warm enough to snooze on. And yup, that's Effie next to her

Effie's interest in coming inside the house is primarily for food and also to be next to Flopsy.
They aren't dumb, they know that good food is found inside the house!

And Flopsy isn't the only one that has discovered the heater. If it is cold outside and Penguin ventures in, he makes a beeline straight for the heater. Plus, he also discovered that the mat is warm to stand on for his little feet.

So there you have it, chickens aren't that dumb are they?

I would let them in all the time, but man, they poo all the time! Or as we call it, little bombs. Penguin and Buffy are not too bad, they tend not to poo that much and they do little poos. The hens on the other hand...giant land mines....

I guess that is one thing that they are not too smart about! Toilet training!

Do you think chickens are dumb? I don't, but then again, I cuddle my chickens ;)
