Buffy and Handy

Image
I've been wanting to do this post for a while now and some recent changes have brought this to the forefront. When young, Penguin was definitely the dominant rooster, chasing all the hens and jumping (somewhat forcefully) on them. Buffy was seen as the small upstart that no one would pay attention to. You can imagine with all the hormone raging in the roosters, he was somewhat frustrated, until he found "Handy".

Rooster behaviour before a fight

Image
I know that Penguin and Buffy love to fight each other, and I've been watching both of them for a while now and I've noticed a particular sequence of events that occur before they start to fight. It tends to happen in this order: Flapping/Crowing Chest Puff Nonchalantly walking closer Crowing After seeing this occur numerous times, I think this is what they are trying to do

Days 19 - 20 - Hakone - Part 2

Image
The last post of our Japan tour is up. Hot on the heels of hubby heading off to Japan for business purposes (I'm so jealous) but there might be an opportunity for me to head over there for business too...(fingers crossed, but what to do with our chickens?!?!) So this post focuses on the main things that people do when they come to Hakone. This is the general route that we took. Train from Hakone-Yumoto (where we were staying) > Gora, where we changed to a cable car>Souzan, where we changed to the ropeway>Owakudani for the eggs>Togendai-ko for the pirate ship>Hakone-machi then a bus back to Hakone-Yumoto.

Predator proofing

Image
Ever since Ash's demise, we've been on a mission to predator proof the chicken runs as much as possible. For us, this meant fully enclosing the run. We had two choices, use bird netting over the top or chicken mesh. As we had no idea what took Ash, we decided on the the mesh.

MAD AS HELL!

Checked the chickens in the morning, all was fine, gave them their treats, cleaned up their poo etc. etc. Came home to find a headless chicken. RIP little Ash.

Hot Hot weekend and an early surprise!

Adelaide managed to swelter through another hot weekend. This time with both days over 40 degrees. It was so hot even a kangaroo decided to take shelter in our shade house.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Image
In case you didn't know, this is the year of the sheep!  Well I think it's supposed to be goat (the Chinese word "Yang" can refer to sheep, goat or rams) since the origin of the word were from people that mainly raised goats. Anyway, I don't have a goat, only a sheep, so here you go! This is also hubby's zodiac year and the horoscope states " Married Goats will get along well with their spouses and will enhance their relationships through daily quarrels ".  Hmmm...does that mean I have to argue with him more? Ha ha. Gong Xi Fa Cai everyone. May you have a happy and prosperous year ahead of you!
