Our rainbow chicken

Did you know that hens can display err...gay behaviour?
This is Flopsy, our lesbian hen!

Before we had Penguin and Buffy, Flopsy was the biggest hen in the flock. Being an all female group, Flopsy decided she wanted to be a rooster.

She grew a spur (one spur)

And err...started errr...mounting a hen. Her sights were set on Effie, the only other chicken her size.
Yes, she would walk up to Effie, jump on her back and even do the tail waggy thing that the roosters do.

And Effie, didn't say no, she just squatted in front of Flopsy like she would do for a rooster (except Buffy, she doesn't think Buffy is a worthy enough rooster to squat for!) Effie will squat for Penguin and Flopsy only (she ain't a tramp!)

Flopsy obviously felt that there was a need for a rooster without Penguin and Buffy there, so she decided to be one. Apparently it can happen quite often, one hen will try to be the dominant hen and naturally adopt rooster behaviour. Apparently there are some that even start to crow! And no, there is nothing wrong with Flopsy's reproductive system, she would lay eggs and mount Effie.

When our roosters grew up and started acting like roosters, Flopsy still tried to be the dominant chicken. She decided to try her luck with Penguin when they were both eating one day and pecked Penguin for invading her personal space. Penguin immediately puffed up, and despite being much smaller than Flopsy at that point, gave her a hard peck to put her in her place. From that day on, Flopsy has stopped mounting Effie, but still tries to be top of the pecking order amongst the hens.

Penguin has showed absolutely no interest in mounting Flopsy, however, he will mount Effie. Interestingly, Flopsy is terrified of Buffy and heads for the hills when she sees the little redhead coming her way.

"Save me from the redhead!"

Nowadays, Flopsy and Effie are inseparable. They are normally never far from each other and they even roost side by side. But if Flopsy still mounts Effie, I certainly haven't seen it!

I guess to show that gay behaviour is also seen in the animal world and it's not something exclusive to humans. Whaddaya know, you learn something new everyday.

Flopsy, just wishes for peace (to sleep).

Hug a chicken!
